International University – VNU is the first international university of Vietnam, and is a public university with its legal status, its own authorized seal and account. It is fully empowered to award all degrees from undergraduate to post graduate levels. Its internationality is reflected in international academic environment of IU – VNU as a whole, including all degree programs, teaching staff, languages of instruction, academic and research infrastructure. For graduate enrollment information in 2021, please follow the instruction below:

Master’s degree

  1. Document folder;
  2. Master’s enrollment application form with portrait;
  3. Or admission application form with portrait;
  4. Curriculum vitae (affixed seal on the portrait with confirmation from the local or work agency within 6 months from the issued date to the enrollment document submission);
  5. 02 notarized copies of Undergraduate degree (or 02 Temporary undergraduate certificates) within 6 months from the issued date to the enrollment document submission and 02 Undergraduate academic transcripts;
  6. Referral letter from the work agency (compulsory for candidates enrolling for Business Administration who do not have economy-related undergraduate degree);
  7. 03 portraits in 3×4 cm size (full name, date of birth and master’s program must be included at the back of the portraits);
  8. Notarized copy of English certificate (if yes);
  9. Certificate of verification for priority cases (if yes);
  10. Notarized copy of ID;
  11. For Vietnamese candidates having undergraduate degree from foreign educational institution:
    • Degree verification given by Ministry of Education and Training (oga.hcmiu.edu.vn)
    • Submission date: attach to enrollment application document or submit before the examination day.
    • Commitment form (compulsory for candidates who submit the degree verification after the examination day).

For students and postgraduates of all programs (except Public Management)

  • English certificate and English test results will be used to determine English proficiency of students.
  • Students/Postgraduates must be eligible for one of the following requirements:
  • Undergraduate degree major in English;
  • Undergraduate or graduate degree using English as a main language without translation;
  • English certificate: IELTS ≥6.0, TOEFL PBT (ITP) ≥ 500, TOEFL IBT ≥ 61, or TOEIC ≥ 600 within 2 years from the issued date to the date of registration for English acquisition;
  • If students are not eligible for either one of three requirements above, English Bridging Program should be considered which consists of Listening, Presenting, Reading and Writing.

5.1 Master’s degree

  • Document review and enrollment fee:
    • Enrollment candidate: 300.000 VND/person
    • Admission candidate: 180.000 VND/person
    • Candidate joining in English test: 120.000 VND/person
  • Tuition fee
    • All programs: ~ 140.000.000 VND (~ 6.000 USD) (not included textbooks and materials)
    • Public Management program (in Vietnamese): ~ 60.000.000 VND

5.2 Doctorate’s degree

  • Document review and enrollment fee: 200.000 VND/person
    • For pre-doctoral cases (second case), candidates must register for:
      • Admission fee for graduate study
    • For graduate examination cases (third case), candidates must register for:
      • Examination registration fee for graduate study
      • Revision instruction (not compulsory)
  • Full-time tuition fee
    • Biotechnology & Biomedical Engineering: ~ 420.000.000 VND (~ 18.000 USD)
    • Business Administration: ~350.000.000 VND (~ 15.000 USD)

5.4 English Bridging program fee – for candidates who are not eligible for English entrance acquisition

6.000.000 VND/person (259 USD). The fee depends on the VND/USD rate every semester.

6.1 Master’s degree

6.1.1 Entrance examination:

Applicants are required to take three exams on: Comprehensive subject (written format), Interview and English.

Conditions to be exempted from the English test: An applicant must meet one of the following conditions (these following documents are submitted together with the application documents)

– The minimum entry of the English language must reach 3/6, which is equivalent to B1 according to CEFR, based on the Regulation on foreign language proficiency standards at VNU-HCM:

Duration: within 2 years between the date of certification and the date of application submission.

– An applicant is a Vietnamese who is either have:

  • A full-time, English-taught PhD, Master, or Bachelor program in abroad universities that is accredited by authorized agency; or
  • A Bachelor’s degree (advanced training program) according to the scheme on the implementation of advanced programs at a number of Vietnamese universities – Ministry of Education and Training or Programme de Formation d’Ingénieurs d’ Excellence au Vietnam (PFIEV) accredited by Commission des Titres d’Ingénieur (CTI) – France, degree given by foreign partners; a Bachelor’s degree from English-based courses accredited by Ministry of Education and Training or Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City; or
  • A Bachelor’s degree in English Linguistics.

– An applicant is a non-Vietnamese, international student who studies in Vietnam and receives a scholarship from the government, in which Vietnam is a member of the international treaties:

  • Minimum entry of Vietnamese proficiency from grade 4 above according to the Vietnamese language ability framework for foreigners; or
  • Minimum entry of English proficiency based on the regulations of the institution; or
  • English exemption in case the applicant enrolls a Master program taught in his/her first language.

6.1.2 Non-entrance examination
Applicants are required to take two exams on: Interview and English.

 Conditions to be exempted from the English test: An applicant must meet one of the following conditions according to section 4.1.

 Eligibility: An applicant must have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree with the same major to the graduate program:

  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited program according to regional and international standards like AUN-QA, AACSB, ACBSP, ABET, EUR-ACE, FIBAA, CTI; or
  • A Bachelor’s degree from a formal, accredited university according to regional and international standards like AUN-QA, HCERES with the cumulative GPA from 7.0 above (10 scale); or
  • A Bachelor’s degree (Honors) from Vietnam National University; or
  • A Bachelor’s degree (advanced training program) according to the scheme on the implementation of advanced programs at a number of Vietnamese universities – Ministry of Education and Training with the cumulative GPA from 7.0 above (10 scale); or
  • A Bachelor’s degree from a formal university with a major similar to that of the graduate program with the cumulative GPA from 8.0 above (10 scale) – Good Grade; or
  • Transition program from Bachelor to Master of VNU-HCM; or
  • A Bachelor’s degree with GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test), GRE (The Graduate Record Examination), or Graduate Aptitude Test held by Vietnam National University within the validity period; or
  • International students.

6.1.3. Direct entry
Undergraduate applicants in Vietnam National University system with major matching to the graduate admission program and English proficiency that meets the requirements in section 4.1, including:

  • A formal engineering program with 150 credits above; or
  • A formal Bachelor’s degree with cumulative GPA from 8.0 above (10 scale); or
  • A valedictorian of a formal Bachelor program; or
  • First, Second, or Third medal of either the national or international Olympic Competition.

6.2 Doctorate’s degree

Third case

Candidates graduated from formal undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering (Very Good) with cumulative GPA from 8,0 above (10 scale) or Good with cumulative GPA from 7,5 above (10 scale) and have at least 1 specialized scientific publication mentioned in the list given by The State Council of Professorship.

Postgraduate admission and proposal defense. Candidates must learn subjects related to Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering (equivalent to 30 credits) in the knowledge revision after successful admission.

6.2.1.4 Public Management

Candidates must submit Master’s academic transcript so the specialized council of the university can determine whether knowledge revision is necessary or not. The maximum number of subjects in the knowledge revision is 5 subjects (equivalent to 10 credits): Public Management, Strategic Management in Public Regions, Public Finance and Capital Budget Planning, Human Resource Management in Public Regions, Behavioral Economics and Public Policy.

6.2.2 English requirements: Candidates who are Vietnamese citizens must have one of the following degrees or certificates for English acquisition:

  • Full-time undergraduate, Master’s or Doctorate’s degree in foreign educational institution in which English is the main teaching language, accredited by authorized agency;
  • Undergraduate, Master’s or Doctorate’s degree major in English given by Vietnamese organizations;
  • English certificate: TOEFL iBT ≥ 45, IELTS ≥ 5.0

Duration: within 12 months from the issued date to the date of enrollment document submission

6.3 Priority policies 

6.3.1 Priority cases

  • Person who has worked for more than 2 years (until the due date of enrollment document submission) in Area 1 according to Regulations of Vietnam National High School Graduation Examination. In this case, candidate has to continue the current job or appoint/dispatch the work agency/authorized organization;
  • Invalid, person who is entitled to invalid’s policies;
  • Martyr’s son/daughter;
  • Hero of the People’s Armed Forces, Hero of Labor;
  • Ethnic minorities;
  • Son/daughter of veteran who was exposed to chemical contaminants, verified by Provincial People’s Committee regarding disabilities and difficulties in daily activities.

6.3.2 Priority levels

Candidates who are belongs to priority cases in section 6.3.1 (one candidate may have more than one priority case) will have a 10 bonus in the language test result (100 scale) if they are not involved in the English test exemption’s cases. A 1 bonus in either one of the two subject examinations (10 scale) will be included according to section 6.1.1.

Priority principle: A 1 bonus will be added to a subject lower than 5,0 in case of another subject is higher than 5,0. In other cases, a 1 bonus will be added to the Interview.

  • Biotechnology program:

Subjects: Entrance tests (Biology and Genetics), Interview and English test.

  • Food Technology program:

Subjects: Entrance tests (Food Chemistry and Biochemistry), Interview and English test.

  • Electronics Engineering program:

Subjects: Entrance tests (Mathematics and Electronics Engineering), Interview and English test.

  • Information Technology Management program:

Subjects: Entrance tests (Data Structure, Database and Computer Networks), Interview (experience, career orientation, specialized knowledge, analytical and problem-solving skills) and English test.

  • Industrial Engineering and Management program:

Subjects: Entrance tests (basic knowledge of Production Management, Statistics and Calculus), Interview and English test.

  • Biomedical Engineering program:

Subjects: Entrance tests (Mathematics, Biostatistics and Introduction to Biomedical Engineering), Interview (understandings and experience about Biomedical Engineering, roles of Biomedical Engineering, current status in Vietnam, purposes and career orientation) and English test.

  • Business Administration program:

Subjects: Entrance tests (basic knowledge about Accounting, Marketing, Management and Economics), Interview (understandings and experience related to management, problem-solving skills and presenting) and English test.

  • Public Management program (in Vietnamese):

Subjects: Entrance tests (analytical essay and problem-solving practices), Interview (analytical, problem-solving and practical tests together with knowledge about state management) and English test

Candidates who had non-related undergraduate degrees must register and finish the knowledge revision before the graduate admission.
